Dental Exams & Cleanings
Preventive dentistry that keeps small problems small. A full examination, scaling to remove plaque and tartar, polishing, fluoride, and an oral-cancer screening, plus practical coaching on brushing and flossing so your results hold between visits..
Dental Exams & Cleanings at Brighter Smile
Preventive dentistry protects you from the expensive, complicated treatment that comes later. A full examination checks for decay, failing fillings, gum disease, jaw problems, and oral cancer. The cleaning that follows removes the plaque and tartar a toothbrush cannot reach, because once plaque hardens into tartar, only a scaler will shift it. Our hygienists are the most-praised part of the practice in our Google reviews.
The cheapest dentistry there is
-
Tartar removed properly
Plaque starts soft and brushes away. Left alone it hardens into tartar, which only a dental scaler or ultrasonic scaler can remove, and tartar is what drives gum disease.
-
Oral cancer screening included
Every examination includes a screening of the soft tissues. Oral cancer is far more survivable when it is found early, and it costs nothing extra to look.
-
Technique coaching that lasts
Our hygienists show you the brushing and flossing technique for your mouth specifically, so the result holds between appointments instead of fading in a fortnight.
-
A cleaner, brighter smile the same day
Polishing and a fluoride treatment leave teeth visibly brighter and enamel stronger before you walk out.
Inside an exam and cleaning appointment
- 01
Examination
We check every tooth for cavities and failing fillings, assess your gums and periodontal health, and look at your bite and jaw.
- 02
Scaling
Hand and ultrasonic scalers remove hardened tartar from above and below the gumline, including the areas a brush never reaches.
- 03
Polish and fluoride
An electric polisher and prophy paste leave the surfaces smooth, then fluoride strengthens the enamel against future decay.
- 04
Screening and advice
A soft-tissue and oral cancer screening, then practical guidance on what to change at home, and when to come back.

Exams & cleanings FAQs

It should not. If your gums are inflamed you may feel some sensitivity during scaling, which settles quickly once the inflammation is treated. Tell your hygienist if you have sensitive teeth or gums, several of our reviews are from patients who came in specifically because they had found scaling uncomfortable elsewhere.
A standard exam and cleaning takes about 45 to 60 minutes. Allow a little longer for a first visit, since it includes a full assessment and any x-rays.
It removes surface staining from coffee, tea, and red wine, so teeth usually look noticeably brighter afterwards. It does not change the underlying colour of the tooth, that needs professional whitening, which we also offer.
No. We take x-rays when they will genuinely tell us something we cannot see by looking, not as a routine at every visit. How often depends on your decay risk and history.
