A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth with a biocompatible titanium post placed in the jawbone. Once the bone has fused to it, a crown is fixed on top. The result looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth, and unlike a bridge it does not rely on grinding down the healthy teeth either side. Implant and gum surgery here is performed by Dr. Pouran Rostamian, a periodontist registered with the College of Dental Surgeons since 1999 and a clinical instructor at the UBC Faculty of Dentistry.

The jawbone keeps its shape
A missing root lets the bone beneath resorb, which over years changes the shape of the lower face. An implant loads the bone the way a natural root does.

The implant process, step by step

Assessment
We check gum health and jawbone density with x-rays to confirm you are a candidate, and discuss bone grafting if the bone has already thinned.

Placing the post
The titanium post is placed into the jawbone under local anaesthetic. Most patients describe it as more straightforward than they expected.
- 03
Healing and integration
The bone fuses to the post over several months. In some cases a replacement tooth can be fitted the same day, ask at your consultation.

The final crown
A custom crown is matched to the shade and shape of your natural teeth and fixed to the implant. Care for it exactly as you would a real tooth.

It depends on the number of implants, the quality and brand of the components, your bone condition, and whether grafting is needed. Complex cases needing a specialist cost more than straightforward ones. We give you a written quote after the assessment, before any treatment is booked.
If you have healthy gums and enough jawbone to hold the post, generally yes. We confirm both with an examination and x-rays. If the bone has thinned, a bone grafting procedure can usually build it back up first.
Come in for an assessment as soon as the tooth is lost or extracted. Waiting beyond about six months allows the jawbone to lose density, which often means grafting is needed before an implant can be placed.
With healthy gums and good hygiene, an implant post can last decades, many last for life. The crown on top may need replacing eventually, much like any other restoration. Regular cleanings are what protect the investment.
The placement is done under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during it. Some tenderness and swelling for a few days afterwards is normal and manageable with ordinary painkillers. We give you full aftercare instructions and a number to call.
